A funny and poignant glimpse of royal romance - straight from the horse's mouth!
'Fred and Gladys' refers to Charles and Camilla's pet names for each other. This was a wittily entertaining parody, opening with a street party in 1981 to celebrate the Charles & Diana Royal Wedding, then moving backwards to the meeting of Charles and Camilla, and forwards to the divorce, Diana’s death, and the next royal wedding (“In a registry office” bemoans the Queen.) It could so easily have become offensive and cruel, but, framed as a fairy-story told to a keen monarchist awaiting the wedding of William and Kate, for most critics, it managed to mix its spoof and sentimentality sufficiently well to entertain. Its wit included lyrics for Charles like “How can I be what others aren’t/ Hamlet mixed with Cary Grant” or a description of Diana as “Like a nurse, but not so starchy/ Mother Theresa in Versace” .
